Scientology (finally) officially indicted in Belgium: fraud, illegal practice of medicine, violation of privacy law and extortion

Translation:

Two non-profit organizations and ten members of the Scientology movement will have to defend themselves before the Brussels criminal court. This was decided by the Council Chamber in Brussels on Thursday. The defendants are the non-profit Church of Scientology of Belgium, and the "European Office for Public Affairs and Human Rights of the Church of Scientology International". The federal prosecutor wants to condemn Scientology as a criminal organization, accusing the defendants of several crimes including fraud, illegal medicine, breaches of privacy laws and extortion.

The first investigation into the Church of Scientology was launched in 1997 when a number of former members filed complaints. Ten years later, the prosecutor asked for twelve people and two companies, the Belgian branch of the Church of Scientology and the European office of the international movement, to be referred to the criminal court.

Before the council could decide on this, however, the court opened a second investigation, this time after the Brussels employment service, Orbem, had filed a complaint. This time it was suspected Scientology published fake job offers, more specifically advertisements in which the organization said to be looking for staff. On closer inspection, however, those who responded to the ad weren't offered a job, but were entered into some kind of volunteer status. Both studies were in the hands of the federal prosecutor, which she decided to merge. This happened a few months ago.

The council has now decided that the crimes of one of the accused have passed the statute of limitations, and that the file of a second suspect should be split because the man only speaks English. Ten other members and two non-profit organizations have been referred to the criminal court. However, they can still appeal against that decision.

The Scientology movement was founded in 1954 by the American science fiction writer Ron Hubbard, and claims to have some 12 million followers worldwide, spread over 8,000 churches in 165 countries.

EDIT A part was added to the article later, apparently Scientology responded:

The "infinitely long investigation [into Scientology] is no less than a modern inquisition and an insult to the freedom of religion and the right of defense", exclaimed the Church of Scientology in a reaction. "The decision taken today raises important question about constitutional principles," claims the movement, which claims to be "fighting against any biased criminal procedure that would violate her fundamental rights."

"The facts were so non-existent that they needed 17 years to compile a case overflowing with rumors and that now results in a process intent on figuring out what the Scientology Religion really is about", the movement claims. The Church of Scientology and its parishioners say they have survived and thrived after similar accusations in Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Great Britain and elsewhere. "Every time the courts have not only established the good faith of the accused, but they also recognized the religious nature of the practices and beliefs of Scientology, as well as their right to be treated the same as other religions. "

Note that they only speak about being "religiously persecuted", and nothing about the accusations themselves (fraud, illegal practice of medicine, violation of privacy laws and extortion).
